Adjectives and Adverbs in Turkish
Sıfatlar ve Zarflar
In Turkish, adjectives modify nouns, while adverbs modify verbs. Interestingly, many adjectives can function as adverbs without changing their form.
Using Adverbs
Most Turkish adverbs are created by context or by repeating the adjective to emphasize the manner.
| Adverb | English | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| İyi | Well | İyi çalışıyor |
| Yavaş | Slowly | Yavaş yürüyor |
| Çok | Very/Much | Çok konuşuyor |
Key Differences
Adjectives describe 'which one' or 'what kind', while adverbs describe 'how' an action is performed.
| Category | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Adjective | Describes a noun | Hızlı araba (Fast car) |
| Adverb | Describes an action | Hızlı koşuyor (He/she runs fast) |
Using Adjectives
Adjectives in Turkish always precede the noun they modify and do not change for case or number.
| Turkish | English | Example Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Güzel | Beautiful | Güzel çiçek |
| Büyük | Big | Büyük ev |
| Eski | Old | Eski kitap |
