Definite Past Tense in Turkish
Görülen Geçmiş Zaman
The definite past tense is used for actions that happened and were witnessed by the speaker. It is formed by adding the suffix -di (and its variations) to the verb stem.
The Suffix Logic
The past tense suffix changes based on Four-Fold Vowel Harmony. If the verb stem ends in a voiceless consonant, the suffix undergoes consonant mutation.
| Last Vowel | Suffix Variation |
|---|---|
| a, ı | -dı |
| e, i | -di |
| o, u | -du |
| ö, ü | -dü |
Conjugation Example: Gelmek (To come)
Applying the suffix and personal endings to the stem 'gel-':
| Person | Turkish | English |
|---|---|---|
| Ben | Geldim | I came |
| Sen | Geldin | You came |
| O | Geldi | He/She came |
| Biz | Geldik | We came |
| Siz | Geldiniz | You came |
| Onlar | Geldiler | They came |

Key Rules
Keep these two rules in mind for the past tense:
Bak-mak (to look) -> Bak-tı (Looked). Note: 'k' makes it -tı instead of -dı.Vowel Harmony
If the stem ends in (f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p), the suffix 'd' becomes 't' (e.g., git-ti).Fıstıkçı Şahap Rule
