Turkish Vowel Harmony
Ünlü Uyumu
Vowel harmony is one of the most important features of Turkish grammar and affects how suffixes are added to words. Most Turkish suffixes change their vowels to match the vowels in the root word. Learning vowel harmony makes Turkish pronunciation and grammar much easier.
Common Mistakes
- Using -lar when -ler is required.
- Ignoring the last vowel of the root word.
- Confusing front vowels with back vowels.
- Choosing the wrong form of four-way harmony suffixes.
- Memorizing suffixes without understanding harmony rules.
- Some borrowed words contain both front and back vowels.
- Proper names may have unusual vowel combinations.
- Suffixes usually still follow harmony regardless of the word's origin.
- A few fixed expressions preserve historical forms.
What Is Vowel Harmony?
Vowel harmony is a system where vowels within a word follow specific patterns. When a suffix is attached to a word, the vowel inside the suffix often changes to match the last vowel of the root word. This creates a smooth and natural sound and is a fundamental principle of Turkish grammar.
Exceptions and Loanwords
Most native Turkish words follow vowel harmony perfectly. However, some borrowed words may not fully follow harmony patterns. Even so, suffixes usually still obey vowel harmony based on the final vowel of the word.
Example Sentences
Turkish Vowel Groups
Turkish vowels are divided into groups that determine which suffix form should be used.
| Group | Vowels |
|---|---|
| Front Vowels | e, i, ö, ü |
| Back Vowels | a, ı, o, u |
| Rounded Vowels | o, ö, u, ü |
| Unrounded Vowels | a, e, ı, i |
Two-Way Vowel Harmony
Some suffixes have two forms. The choice depends on whether the last vowel of the word is a front vowel or a back vowel.
| Last Vowel | Suffix Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a, ı, o, u | -lar | kitaplar |
| e, i, ö, ü | -ler | evler |
Common Harmonic Suffixes
| Suffix Function | Forms | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Plural | -lar / -ler | arabalar, evler |
| Accusative | -ı / -i / -u / -ü | kitabı, evi |
| Possessive (my) | -ım / -im / -um / -üm | evim, yolum |
| Locative | -da / -de | evde, okulda |
Four-Way Vowel Harmony
Many common suffixes have four possible vowel forms. The correct form depends on both front/back and rounded/unrounded vowel characteristics.
| Last Vowel | Suffix Vowel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a, ı | ı | kapıyı |
| e, i | i | evi |
| o, u | u | okulu |
| ö, ü | ü | günü |
How Suffix Selection Works
To choose the correct suffix, look at the final vowel of the root word. That vowel determines which harmonic version of the suffix should be used.
| Word | Last Vowel | Correct Form |
|---|---|---|
| ev | e | evler |
| kitap | a | kitaplar |
| gün | ü | günü |
| okul | u | okulu |
