Word Order in Turkish

Cümle Yapısı

Turkish grammar follows a strict structural logic. The most golden rule is that the verb must always be at the end of the sentence.

Basic Sentence Structure (SOV)

The standard Turkish sentence structure follows the Subject-Object-Verb pattern.

SubjectObjectVerb
Alielmayedi
Alian appleate

Example Sentences

Ben Türkçe öğreniyorum.I am learning Turkish.
Dün akşam arkadaşımla sinemaya gittim.I went to the cinema with my friend last night.
Çocuklar bahçede top oynuyor. The children are playing ball in the garden.
O, bana bir hediye verdi.He/She gave a gift to me.
  • Emphasis: Moving a word closer to the verb increases its importance/emphasis.
  • Conversational: In spoken Turkish, elements can be rearranged if the speaker wants to highlight specific information.
  • Questions: The question particle '-mi' often dictates the focus of the sentence.

Is it always rigid?

While SOV is standard, Turkish word order can be flexible for emphasis.

Expanding the Sentence

When adding more details (time, place, manner), they generally fall between the subject and the verb.

StructureOrder Example
StandardSubject + Time + Place + Object + Verb
ExampleAli + yarın + evde + kitap + okuyacak
LiteralAli + tomorrow + at home + book + will read
