Question Formation in Spanish
La formación de preguntas
Spanish questions can be formed through intonation, word order changes, or question words. All written questions must have opening (¿) and closing (?) question marks.
Example: Statement: Hablas español. → Question: ¿Hablas español?

- Should I invert the subject and verb?
- Do I need a preposition before the question word?

Word Order in Questions
Spanish has flexible word order in questions.
- Verb typically comes before subject
- Question word + verb + subject is common
- Subject can be omitted if context is clear
- Object pronouns stay before verb
Accent Marks on Question Words
All interrogative words carry written accents to distinguish them from other words.
| With Accent (Question) | Without Accent (Other) |
|---|---|
| ¿Qué? (What?) | que (that/which) |
| ¿Quién? (Who?) | quien (who/whom - relative) |
| ¿Dónde? (Where?) | donde (where - relative) |
| ¿Cómo? (How?) | como (like/as) |
| ¿Cuándo? (When?) | cuando (when - conjunction) |
- Question words always have accents: qué, quién, dónde, cuándo, cómo, cuál, cuánto
- Don't confuse with relative pronouns (no accent)
- Accents help distinguish meaning
