German Plural Nouns
Pluralformen
Unlike English, German does not have a single rule for forming plurals. German nouns use several different plural patterns that must often be learned individually.
Singular and Plural
A singular noun refers to one thing, while a plural noun refers to multiple things.
| Singular | Plural | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| der Hund | die Hunde | dog → dogs |
| die Katze | die Katzen | cat → cats |
| das Kind | die Kinder | child → children |
| das Auto | die Autos | car → cars |
Umlaut Changes
Some nouns change their vowel when forming the plural.
| Singular | Plural | Change |
|---|---|---|
| der Mann | die Männer | a → ä |
| die Tochter | die Töchter | o → ö |
| das Buch | die Bücher | u → ü |
| der Vater | die Väter | a → ä |
Plural Articles
All plural nouns use the definite article 'die', regardless of gender.
| Singular | Plural |
|---|---|
| der Hund | die Hunde |
| die Katze | die Katzen |
| das Haus | die Häuser |
| das Kind | die Kinder |
Common Plural Endings
German nouns commonly form plurals using several different endings.
| Ending | Example | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| -e | der Hund | die Hunde |
| -er | das Kind | die Kinder |
| -en / -n | die Katze | die Katzen |
| -s | das Auto | die Autos |
| No ending | der Lehrer | die Lehrer |
Common Mistakes
Plural formation is one of the biggest memorization challenges in German.
- Assuming every noun simply adds -s.
- Forgetting umlaut changes.
- Learning nouns without their plural form.
- Using the singular article with a plural noun.
Useful Patterns
While there are exceptions, some noun groups often share similar plural forms.
- Many feminine nouns take -en or -n.
- Many neuter nouns take -er.
- Many foreign words take -s.
- Some nouns add an umlaut in the plural.
- Some nouns have the same singular and plural form.
Questions to Ask Yourself
When learning a new noun, ask yourself these questions.
- What is the plural form?
- Does the noun add -e, -er, -en, or -s?
- Does the vowel change with an umlaut?
- Is the plural identical to the singular?
- Have I memorized both singular and plural forms?
What Are Plural Nouns?
Plural nouns refer to more than one person, object, place, or idea. German uses several plural endings, and the plural form of a noun is often memorized together with the singular form.
