Reflexive Verbs in German
reflexive Verben
Test yourself with a quick quizA reflexive verb comes with a pronoun that refers back to the subject. Many everyday German verbs are reflexive even when the English verb is not, so learn them together with sich.
Reflexive Pronouns
Reflexive pronouns have an accusative and a dative form. They only differ for ich and du. For er, sie, es, sie and the formal Sie, the pronoun is always sich.
| Subject | Accusative | Dative | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | mich | mir | Ich wasche mich. |
| du | dich | dir | Du wäschst dir die Hände. |
| er/sie/es | sich | sich | Er rasiert sich. |
| wir | uns | uns | Wir freuen uns. |
| ihr | euch | euch | Ihr beeilt euch. |
| sie/Sie | sich | sich | Sie setzen sich. |
Accusative or Dative?
The pronoun is accusative by default. It becomes dative when the sentence already has an accusative object, often a body part or a piece of clothing. A few verbs, like sich etwas vorstellen, sich etwas merken and sich etwas wünschen, always take the dative.
Common Reflexive Verbs
| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sich freuen auf | to look forward to | Ich freue mich auf das Wochenende. |
| sich freuen über | to be happy about | Sie freut sich über das Geschenk. |
| sich erinnern an | to remember | Erinnerst du dich an mich? |
| sich interessieren für | to be interested in | Er interessiert sich für Musik. |
| sich fühlen | to feel | Ich fühle mich heute nicht gut. |
| sich beeilen | to hurry | Wir müssen uns beeilen. |
| sich treffen | to meet | Wir treffen uns um acht. |
| sich entschuldigen | to apologise | Sie hat sich entschuldigt. |
| sich etwas merken | to remember, memorise | Das kann ich mir nie merken. |
| sich etwas wünschen | to wish for | Was wünschst du dir zum Geburtstag? |
Reflexive or Not?
Many verbs work both ways. With a normal object, the action goes to someone else. With a reflexive pronoun, it goes back to the subject.

Word Order, Negatives and Questions
The pronoun comes right after the conjugated verb, or right after a pronoun subject that follows the verb. It stays near the front with modal verbs and in the Perfekt, which always uses haben. Nicht usually comes after the pronoun.
Commands
The pronoun stays in commands. With Sie, the pronoun is sich, never Sie or Ihnen.
| Form | Command | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| du | Beeil dich! | Hurry up! |
| ihr | Setzt euch! | Sit down! |
| Sie | Setzen Sie sich bitte! | Please sit down! |
| wir | Treffen wir uns morgen! | Let's meet tomorrow! |
