Adjective Endings in German
Adjektivdeklination
Test yourself with a quick quizWhen an adjective stands before a noun, it takes an ending. The ending depends on the word in front of it, the gender and the case.
When Adjectives Take an Ending
Adjectives only take an ending directly before a noun. After sein, werden or bleiben they keep their base form.
Three Patterns
There are three sets of endings. The basic idea: if the article already shows the gender and case, the adjective takes a weak ending. If there is no article, or the article has no ending, the adjective shows it instead.
| Pattern | Words before the adjective | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Weak | der, die, das, dieser, jeder, welcher, alle | der alte Mann |
| Mixed | ein, kein, mein, dein, sein, unser, euer, ihr | ein alter Mann |
| Strong (no article) | zwei, drei, viele, einige, wenige | alter Wein |
Weak Endings after der-Words
There are only two weak endings: -e in the nominative singular and in the feminine and neuter accusative singular, and -en everywhere else.
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | der alte Tisch | die alte Lampe | das alte Bett | die alten Stühle |
| Accusative | den alten Tisch | die alte Lampe | das alte Bett | die alten Stühle |
| Dative | dem alten Tisch | der alten Lampe | dem alten Bett | den alten Stühlen |
| Genitive | des alten Tisches | der alten Lampe | des alten Bettes | der alten Stühle |

Mixed Endings after ein-Words
These are the same as the weak endings except in the three places where ein has no ending: the masculine nominative takes -er, and the neuter nominative and accusative take -es. Ein has no plural, so the plural column uses kein.
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | ein alter Tisch | eine alte Lampe | ein altes Bett | keine alten Stühle |
| Accusative | einen alten Tisch | eine alte Lampe | ein altes Bett | keine alten Stühle |
| Dative | einem alten Tisch | einer alten Lampe | einem alten Bett | keinen alten Stühlen |
| Genitive | eines alten Tisches | einer alten Lampe | eines alten Bettes | keiner alten Stühle |
Strong Endings with No Article
With no article, the adjective takes almost the same endings as der, die, das. The only exception is the masculine and neuter genitive, which take -en.
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | kalter Kaffee | kalte Milch | kaltes Wasser | kalte Getränke |
| Accusative | kalten Kaffee | kalte Milch | kaltes Wasser | kalte Getränke |
| Dative | kaltem Kaffee | kalter Milch | kaltem Wasser | kalten Getränken |
| Genitive | kalten Kaffees | kalter Milch | kalten Wassers | kalter Getränke |
