The Subjunctive II in German

Konjunktiv II

Test yourself with a quick quiz

Konjunktiv II is the German form for things that are not real: wishes, polite requests, advice and imagined situations. Most verbs use würde + infinitive, while a few very common verbs have their own forms.

Würde + Infinitive

Conjugate würde and put the infinitive at the end of the clause. This works for almost every verb and is the normal choice in speech.

SubjectwürdeExample
ichwürdeIch würde gern mehr reisen.
duwürdestWürdest du mir helfen?
er/sie/eswürdeSie würde nie lügen.
wirwürdenWir würden gern noch bleiben.
ihrwürdetIhr würdet das verstehen.
sie/SiewürdenWürden Sie das Fenster öffnen?

Verbs with Their Own Forms

Sein, haben and the modal verbs don't use würde. Their Konjunktiv II is built from the Präteritum, usually with an umlaut.

er/sie/eswärehättekönntemüsste
wirwärenhättenkönntenmüssten
ihrwärthättetkönntetmüsstet
sie/Siewärenhättenkönntenmüssten

Dürfen becomes dürfte. Sollen and wollen look the same as their Präteritum: sollte, wollte. A few other verbs keep their own form in everyday German too.

Polite Requests and Advice

Konjunktiv II makes requests softer and more polite than the present tense. For advice, use sollte or an deiner Stelle with würde.

Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?Could you help me, please?
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.I'd like a coffee, please. The standard way to order in a café or shop.
Wäre es möglich, den Termin zu verschieben?Would it be possible to move the appointment?
Du solltest mehr Wasser trinken. You should drink more water.
An deiner Stelle würde ich das Angebot annehmen. If I were you, I'd accept the offer.

Wishes

For a wish about the present, use ich wünschte or a wenn clause with nur or doch.

Ich wünschte, du wärst hier.I wish you were here.
Wenn ich nur mehr Zeit hätte! If only I had more time!
Wenn es doch endlich Sommer wäre!If only it were summer at last!

Unreal Conditions with Wenn

A real condition uses the present tense. An unreal one uses Konjunktiv II in both parts. The verb goes to the end of the wenn clause, and the main clause then starts with its verb.

Real (possible)Unreal (imagined)
Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich.Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.
Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.Wenn es nicht regnen würde, könnten wir grillen.
Wenn ich Geld habe, kaufe ich ein Fahrrad.Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich um die Welt reisen.

Talking about the Past

For unreal situations in the past, use hätte or wäre with the past participle. The choice between them follows the Perfekt.

Wenn ich das gewusst hätte, wäre ich früher gekommen. If I had known that, I would have come earlier.
Das hätte ich nicht gedacht.I wouldn't have thought that.
