Relative Pronouns in French

Relative pronouns are used to connect two clauses and avoid repetition by referring back to a noun.

Using « où »

« Où » refers to a place or a moment in time.

Using « dont »

« Dont » is used to replace de + noun or verbs that require the preposition de.

  • La ville où je vis est grande.
  • Le jour où nous sommes arrivés était froid.

Using « lequel » Forms

Forms of « lequel » are used after prepositions (à, avec, pour, sur, etc.) and must agree in gender and number with the noun.

Qui vs Que

The choice between qui and que depends on the grammatical role of the pronoun in the relative clause.

PronounRoleExample
quiSubjectLe livre qui est sur la table
queDirect objectLe livre que je lis
  • Le film dont je parle est intéressant.
  • La femme dont il se souvient est ici.
  • Les idées dont nous avons besoin sont claires.

Core Function

A relative pronoun links a main clause to a subordinate clause while referring to a previously mentioned noun.

Agreement Rules

Relative pronouns may require agreement depending on their form and function.

Common Mistakes

  • Using « que » when the pronoun is the subject
  • Forgetting agreement with « lequel » forms
  • Using « dont » instead of « que » incorrectly
  • Repeating the noun instead of using a relative pronoun
  • La table sur laquelle il écrit
  • Les raisons pour lesquelles elle est partie
  • Le problème auquel nous faisons face
  • « qui » and « que » do not change form
  • « lequel » agrees in gender and number
  • Past participle agrees with a preceding « que »
  • qui = subject of the relative clause
  • que = direct object of the relative clause
  • dont = replaces de + noun or verb
  • où = refers to a place or time
  • lequel = replaces complex prepositional forms

What Are Relative Pronouns?

Relative pronouns replace a noun (the antecedent) and introduce a relative clause that gives more information about it.
