Articoli Determinativi e Indeterminativi

Italian articles are like the English 'the' or 'a/an', but they must match the gender, number, and the first letter of the word they precede.

The 'Sound' Rule (Euphony)

In Italian, the article changes to ensure a smooth flow of speech. For example, we use 'lo' instead of 'il' before 'z' or 's + consonant' because it is easier to pronounce.

TypeEquivalentItalian Example
DefiniteThe (specific)Il libro (The book)
IndefiniteA / An (general)Un libro (A book)

Definite Articles: 'The'

This is the most complex part of Italian grammar for beginners. You must choose based on how the noun starts.

  • Masculine: 'il' (consonant), 'lo' (s+consonant, z, ps, gn, y), 'l'' (vowel).
  • Feminine: 'la' (consonant), 'l'' (vowel).
  • Plural Masculine: 'i' (consonant), 'gli' (vowel or special consonants).
  • Plural Feminine: 'le' (all cases).

Masculine Definite Articles

The masculine plural 'gli' is used specifically where 'lo' or 'l'' were used in singular.

Starts With...SingularPlural
Consonant (b, c, d...)il ragazzoi ragazzi
Vowel (a, e, i, o, u)l'amicogli amici
S + Consonant / Z / GNlo zaino / lo studentegli zaini / gli studenti

The Apostrophe Rule

Feminine 'una' becomes 'un'' before a vowel. Masculine 'un' NEVER takes an apostrophe because 'un' is already a complete word form.

The indefinite article only exists in the singular. For 'some', we use partitives (which we will cover later).
