Negation

La Negazione

Negation is used to deny a statement or express the absence of an action. The primary negative particle is NON, which is placed before the conjugated verb.

The Standard Negative Structure

To make a sentence negative, place 'non' immediately before the verb.

AffirmativeNegativeTranslation
Io parloIo non parloI do not speak
Lui mangiaLui non mangiaHe does not eat
Noi siamoNoi non siamoWe are not

Key Rules

Follow these logic steps for correct negation:

  • Place 'non' before the verb.
  • Place 'non' before object or reflexive pronouns.
  • Use 'non' with 'mai', 'niente', or 'nessuno' if they follow the verb.
  • Omit 'non' if 'nessuno' or 'niente' starts the sentence.

Word Order with Pronouns

When pronouns are present, the negative particle 'non' occupies the first position in the verb cluster.

CategoryStructureExample
Direct PronounsNon + Pronoun + VerbNon lo so
Reflexive PronounsNon + Pronoun + VerbNon mi lavo
CombinedNon + Pronouns + VerbNon ve lo dico

Negatives as Subjects

If a negative word acts as the subject and precedes the verb, the particle 'non' is omitted.

Negative Adverbs and Pronouns

Additional negative words provide specific meaning. When these follow the verb, 'non' must still precede the verb (Double Negation).
