The Imperfect Tense in Italian

L'imperfetto

Test yourself with a quick quiz

The imperfetto describes the past as it was going on: habits, background and descriptions. You can recognise it by the -v- in its endings: parlavo, leggevo, dormivo.

How to Form the Imperfect

Drop the -re of the infinitive and add -vo, -vi, -va, -vamo, -vate, -vano. The vowel of the infinitive (a, e, i) stays. Verbs like capire don't add -isc-: capivo.

Irregular Verbs

Essere is the only fully irregular verb. A few others use an older, longer stem but take the regular endings. Avere and stare are regular: avevo, stavo.

Imperfetto vs Passato Prossimo

The passato prossimo tells what happened: a finished event. The imperfetto tells what was going on around it. When an action interrupts another, the interrupted one is in the imperfetto (see the lesson on the passato prossimo).

Some time words point to one tense or the other. They are tendencies, not rules.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the passato prossimo for repeated past habits: "Da piccolo andavo a scuola a piedi", not "sono andato".
  • Using the imperfetto for a single event with a clear end: "Ieri ho visto Luca", not "vedevo".
  • Building fare and dire from the infinitive: "facevo" and "dicevo", not "farevo" and "direvo".
  • Mixing the stress: say parlAvo and parlAvano, with the stress on the a.
