Le preposizioni semplici e articolate

Test yourself with a quick quiz

Italian has a small set of simple prepositions, and the most common ones merge with the definite article that follows them: di + il = del, a + la = alla, in + lo = nello.

The Simple Prepositions

Each preposition has a few core meanings. Tra and fra mean exactly the same; choose the one that sounds better next to the following word.

PrepositionMain meaningsExample
diof, from (with essere), aboutil libro di Marco
ato, at, in (cities)Vado a Roma.
dafrom, at someone's place, sinceTorno da Napoli.
inin, to (countries, rooms, transport)Vivo in Italia.
conwithEsco con Anna.
suon, aboutun film su Venezia
perfor, through, in order toQuesto è per te.
tra / frabetween, among, in (time from now)Arrivo tra dieci minuti.

Articulated Prepositions

Di, a, da, in and su join the article into one word. The article follows the normal rules: lo before s + consonant and z, l' before a vowel. Con, per, tra and fra stay separate.

  • Family: singular relatives with a possessive take no article, so no contraction: "a mia madre", but "ai miei fratelli".
  • Countries: no article after in, unless the country is described: "in Italia", but "nell'Italia del Sud".
  • Plural countries keep the article: "negli Stati Uniti".
  • Some, any: di + article also means "some": "Ho comprato del pane".

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the parts separately: "nel cassetto", not "in il cassetto".
  • Using per for ongoing time: "Abito qui da tre anni", not "per tre anni".
  • Using in for future time: "tra un'ora" (an hour from now), not "in un'ora".
  • Using a with countries: "in Germania", not "a Germania".
  • Choosing the wrong article: "nello zaino" and "degli studenti", not "nel zaino" and "dei studenti".
