英语的过去进行时

过去进行时表示过去某一时刻正在进行的动作，相当于汉语的“那时正在……”。它的构成是was 或 were + 动词-ing。

过去进行时的构成

I、he、she 和 it 用 was，you、we 和 they 用 were，后面再加动词的 -ing 形式。

-ing 形式的拼写

大多数动词直接加 -ing，但有几条拼写规则会改变动词的词尾。

去掉词尾不发音的 e	make	making
重读闭音节，末尾只有一个辅音：双写该辅音	run	running
ie 变成 y	lie	lying

过去某一时刻正在进行的动作

用于在某个时间点已经开始、但还没有结束的事情。

At eight o'clock last night, I was having dinner.昨晚八点，我正在吃晚饭。晚饭在八点之前开始，八点以后还在继续。

This time yesterday, we were flying to Lisbon.昨天这个时候，我们正坐飞机去里斯本。

What were you doing at midnight?半夜十二点你在干什么？

被打断的动作：when 和 while

用过去进行时表示的较长动作，常常被用一般过去时表示的短暂动作打断。when 通常放在短暂动作前面，while 通常放在较长动作前面。

句型	例句
过去进行时 + when + 一般过去时	I was cooking when the phone rang.
while + 过去进行时，一般过去时	While I was cooking, the phone rang.
用 while 连接两个较长的动作	I was reading while my husband was watching TV.

在故事中铺垫场景

故事常常用过去进行时开头来描写背景，接着用一般过去时讲述主要事件。

It was a cold night. The wind was blowing and it was raining hard.那是一个寒冷的夜晚。风呼呼地刮着，雨下得很大。

Suddenly, someone knocked on the door.突然，有人敲门。

过去进行时与一般过去时

一般过去时用于完整的动作和一连串的事件。过去进行时用于当时正进行到一半的动作。

一般过去时	过去进行时
I watched a film last night.	I was watching a film at ten o'clock.
When she arrived, we had dinner.	When she arrived, we were having dinner.
He got up, dressed and left.	He was getting dressed when I called.

注意第二行的区别：第一句是她到了以后才开始吃晚饭；第二句是她到的时候晚饭已经开始了。

通常不用进行时的动词

know、like、want、need、believe 和 understand 等状态动词一般只用一般过去时。

When I was arriving, he left.	When I arrived, he was leaving.

I was walking home when I met an old friend.我走路回家时碰到了一位老朋友。

She wasn't listening to the teacher.她当时没在听老师讲课。

While we were having lunch, it started to snow.我们正吃午饭的时候，开始下雪了。

The children were playing in the garden all afternoon.孩子们一下午都在花园里玩。
