On the night of December 20, 1849, a very violent hurricane raged over Mompracem, a wild island with a sinister reputation and a den of formidable pirates, located in the Malay Sea, a few hundred miles from the western coast of Borneo.

Across the sky, driven by an irresistible wind, black masses of vapor raced like unbridled horses, mingling in confusion, and from time to time they let down furious showers on the dark forests of the island. On the sea, also raised by the wind, enormous waves crashed in disorder and broke furiously, their roar mingling with the sometimes brief and dry, sometimes interminable bursts of lightning.

Neither from the huts lined up at the bottom of the island's bay, nor on the fortifications that defended them, nor on the numerous ships anchored beyond the cliffs, nor beneath the woods, nor on the tumultuous surface of the sea, could any light be seen; but anyone coming from the east and looking up would have seen on the summit of a very high cliff, cut sheer into the sea, two points of light shining, two brightly lit windows.

Who was keeping watch at that hour and in such a storm on the island of bloodthirsty pirates?

Amidst a labyrinth of broken trenches, crumbling embankments, torn-down fences, and gutted gabions, where shattered weapons and human bones could still be seen, a vast, solid hut stood, adorned at the top with a large red flag, with a tiger's head in the middle.

One room of that dwelling is illuminated, the walls are covered with heavy red fabrics, velvets and brocades of great value, but here and there crumpled, torn and stained, and the floor disappears under a thick layer of Persian carpets, glittering with gold, but these too torn and stained.

In the center stands an ebony table, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and adorned with silver friezes, laden with bottles and glasses of the rarest crystal; in the corners stand large shelves, partly ruined, crammed with vases overflowing with gold bracelets, earrings, rings, medallions, precious sacred vessels, twisted or crushed, pearls undoubtedly from the famous fishponds of Ceylon, emeralds, rubies, and diamonds that sparkle like so many suns, reflected by a golden lamp suspended from the ceiling.

In one corner stands a Turkish sofa with its fringes torn here and there; in another, an ebony harmonium with its keyboard defaced; and scattered around, in an indescribable confusion, are rolled-up carpets, splendid robes, paintings perhaps the work of famous artists, overturned lamps, upright or upside-down bottles, whole or broken glasses, and then arabesque Indian carbines, Spanish trombones, sabers, scimitars, hatchets, daggers, and pistols.

In that strangely furnished room, a man sits in a rickety armchair: he is tall, slender, with powerful muscles, energetic, masculine, proud features, and a strange beauty.

Long hair falls to his shoulders: a jet-black beard frames his slightly tanned face.

He has a broad forehead, shaded by two beautiful eyebrows with a bold arch, a small mouth that shows teeth as sharp as those of wild beasts and as glittering as pearls; two very black eyes, of a brilliance that fascinates, that burns, that makes every other gaze lower.

He had been sitting for some minutes, his gaze fixed on the lamp, his hands nervously clasped around his rich scimitar, which hung from a broad red silk sash, tied around a blue velvet jacket with gold trim.

A formidable crash, which shook the large hut to its foundations, abruptly tore him from that immobility.

She threw back her long, curly hair, secured her turban, adorned with a splendid diamond as big as a walnut, and rose suddenly, casting a look around her that was dark and menacing.

- È mezzanotte - mormorò egli. - Mezzanotte e non è ancora tornato!

“It’s midnight,” he muttered. “Midnight and he still hasn’t come back!”

He slowly emptied a glass filled with an amber-colored liquid, then opened the door, walked steadily between the trenches that defended the hut and stopped on the edge of the great cliff, at the base of which the sea roared furiously.

He stood there for a few minutes with his arms crossed, as still as the rock that supported him, inhaling with pleasure the terrible gusts of the storm and casting his gaze out over the troubled sea, then he slowly withdrew, re-entered the hut and stopped in front of the harmonium.

- Quale contrasto! - esclamò. - Al di fuori l’uragano e qua io! Quale il più tremendo?

"What a contrast!" he exclaimed. "The hurricane outside, and me here! Which is the more terrible?"

He ran his fingers over the keyboard, producing very rapid sounds that had something strange, wild about them, and then he slowed them down until they faded away amidst the thunder of lightning and the whistling of the wind.

Suddenly he turned his head sharply toward the half-open door. He listened for a moment, hunched forward, his ears straining, then quickly exited, pushing himself to the edge of the cliff.

In a quick flash of lightning he saw a small vessel, with its sails almost furled, enter the bay and disappear among the anchored vessels.

Our man put a golden whistle to his lips and blew three shrill notes; a shrill whistle answered a moment later.

- È lui! - mormorò con viva emozione. - Era tempo!

“It’s him!” she murmured with deep emotion. “It’s about time!”

Five minutes later a human being, wrapped in a large cloak dripping with water, appeared in front of the hut.

- Yanez!

“Yanez!” the turbaned man exclaimed, throwing his arms around his neck.

- Sandokan! - Brr! Che notte d’inferno, fratellino mio.

"Sandokan!" replied the newcomer, with a very strong foreign accent. "Brr! What a hellish night, my little brother."

- Vieni!

- You come!

They quickly crossed the trenches and entered the brightly lit room, closing the door.

Sandokan filled two glasses and, handing one to the stranger who had thrown off his cloak and the rifle he was carrying around his shoulder, said to him, in an almost affectionate tone:

- Bevi, mio buon Yanez.

- Drink, my good Yanez.

- Alla tua salute, Sandokan.

- Cheers, Sandokan.

- Alla tua.

- To yours.

They emptied their glasses and sat down at the table.

The newcomer was a man of about thirty-three or thirty-four, that is, a little older than his companion.

He was of medium height, very robust, with very white skin, regular features, grey, astute eyes, mocking and thin lips, a sign of an iron will.

At first sight it was clear that he was not only a European, but that he must belong to some southern race.

- Well, Yanez, - asked Sandokan, with a certain emotion, - have you seen the girl with golden hair?

- No, ma so quanto volevi sapere.

- No, but I know what you wanted to know.

- Non sei andato a Labuan?

- You didn't go to Labuan?

- Yes, but you will understand that on those coasts guarded by the English cruisers, it is difficult for people of our species to land.

- Parlami di questa fanciulla. Chi è?

- Tell me about this girl. Who is she?

- I'll tell you that she is a wonderfully beautiful creature, so beautiful that she can bewitch the most formidable pirate.

- Ah! - esclamò Sandokan.

- Ah! - exclaimed Sandokan.

- They told me she has hair as blond as gold, eyes bluer than the sea, and flesh as white as alabaster.

I know that Alamba, one of our most ferocious pirates, saw her one evening walking under the woods of the island and that he was so struck by her beauty that he stopped his ship to better contemplate her, at the risk of being massacred by the English cruisers.

- Ma a chi appartiene?

- But who does it belong to?

- Some say she is the daughter of a settler, others of a lord, and still others that she is none other than a relative of the governor of Labuan.

- Strana creatura - mormorò Sandokan, comprimendosi colle mani la fronte.

“Strange creature,” Sandokan muttered, pressing his forehead with his hands.

- E così?... - chiese Yanez.

- So?... - asked Yanez.

The pirate didn't answer. He had abruptly stood up, overcome by intense emotion, and had moved to the harmonium, running his fingers over the keys.

Yanez simply smiled and, taking an old mandola from a nail, began to pluck the strings, saying:

- Sta bene! Facciamo un po’ di musica.

- All right! Let's make some music.

But he had just begun to play a Portuguese tune when he saw Sandokan approach the table abruptly, pushing his hands on it with such violence that he made it bend over.

He was no longer the same man as before: his brow was furrowed in a stormy frown, his eyes flashed darkly, his lips, drawn back, showed his convulsively clenched teeth, his limbs trembled.

At that moment he was the formidable leader of the ferocious pirates of Mompracem, he was the man who for ten years had bloodied the coasts of Malaysia, the man who had fought terrible battles everywhere, the man whose extraordinary audacity and indomitable courage had earned him the nickname of the Tiger of Malaysia.

- Yanez!

"Yanez!" he exclaimed in a tone of voice that no longer had anything human about it. "What are the English doing in Labuan?"

- Si fortificano - rispose tranquillamente l’europeo.

“They are fortifying themselves,” the European replied calmly.

- Forse che tramano qualche cosa contro di me?

- Are they plotting something against me?

- Lo credo.

- I believe it.

- Ah!

"Ah! You believe that? Let them dare raise a finger against my Mompracem! Tell them to challenge the pirates in their lairs! The Tiger will destroy every last one of them and drink all their blood. Tell me, what do they say about me?"

- It's time to put an end to such a bold pirate.

- E mi odiano molto?

-And do they hate me a lot?

- So much so that they would be happy to lose all their ships just to hang you.

- Ah!

- Ah!

- Dubiti forse?

-Are you doubting? My little brother, for many years you have been committing one worse than the other.

All the coasts bear the traces of your raids; all the villages and cities have been attacked and sacked by you; all the Dutch, Spanish, and English forts have received your bullets, and the seabed is full of ships sunk by you.

"That's true, but whose fault is it? Weren't the white men merciless with me? Didn't they overthrow me on the pretext that I was becoming too powerful?"

Quale male avevo io fatto a costoro?

Didn't they murder my mother, my brothers, and my sisters, to destroy my lineage? What harm had I done to them? The white race had never had cause to complain about me, yet they wanted to crush me.

Now I hate them, whether they are Spanish, or Dutch, or English, or Portuguese, your compatriots, I abhor them and I will take terrible revenge on them, I swore it on the corpses of my family and I will keep my oath!

«But if I have been ruthless with my enemies, I hope some voice will be raised to say that I have sometimes been generous.»

- Not one, but a hundred, a thousand voices can well say that you have been too generous with the weak - said Yanez.

"All those women who fell into your power, whom you led, at the risk of being sunk by cruisers, to the ports of the white men, can say it; the weak tribes you defended against the raids of the powerful, the poor sailors deprived of their ships by storms and whom you saved from the waves and showered with gifts, and hundreds and thousands more who will always remember your benefits, O Sandokan."

"But tell me now, my little brother, what do you want to conclude?"

The Tiger of Malaysia didn't answer. He had begun pacing the room with his arms crossed and his head bowed. What was this formidable man thinking?

The Portuguese Yanez, although he had known him for a long time, could not guess him.

- Sandokan, - disse dopo qualche minuto, - a che cosa pensi?

- Sandokan, - he said after a few minutes, - what are you thinking about?

The Tiger stopped and looked at him fixedly, but still did not answer.

- Hai qualche pensiero che ti tormenta? - riprese Yanez. - Toh!

"Are you worried about something?" Yanez continued. "Look! It seems you're worried because the English hate you so much."

Anche questa volta il pirata stette zitto.

This time too the pirate remained silent.

The Portuguese stood up, lit a cigarette and walked towards a door hidden by the wallpaper, saying:

- Buona notte, fratellino mio.

- Good night, my little brother.

Sandokan was shocked by these words and, stopping the Portuguese with a gesture, said:

- Una parola, Yanez.

- One word, Yanez.

- Parla adunque.

- Speak then.

- Sai che voglio andare a Labuan?

- You know I want to go to Labuan?

- Tu!... A Labuan!...

- You!... In Labuan!...

- Perché tanta sorpresa?

- Why so much surprise?

- Because you are too bold and would commit some madness in the lair of your most bitter enemies.

Sandokan looked at him with two eyes that were burning and let out a kind of dull roar.

Sta’ in guardia!

"My brother," the Portuguese continued, "don't push your luck too hard. Be on your guard! Hungry England has set its sights on our Mompracem and perhaps is only waiting for your death to pounce on your tiger cubs and destroy them."

Be on your guard, for I have seen a cruiser bristling with guns and packed with men buzzing in our waters, and that one is a lion waiting for nothing but prey.

- Ma incontrerà la Tigre! - esclamò Sandokan, stringendo i pugni e fremendo dai piedi al capo.

"But he will meet the Tiger!" exclaimed Sandokan, clenching his fists and trembling from head to foot.

"Yes, he will meet her and perhaps succumb in battle, but his death cry will reach the shores of Labuan, and others will move against you. Many lions will die, for you are strong and fearsome, but the Tiger will die too!"

- Io!...

- I!...
